(Grand Cayman - CITN) -

The premier calls an emergency meeting with all the heads in the civil service, telling them pay cuts are coming soon.

MLA's have already confirmed they're taking a cut, now the question is can they force the rest of the civil service to do the same?

Government has gained the support of the Chamber of Commerce.  A spokesperson from the organization says it is the right decision to reduce MLA salaries by up to 25% and to make them pay half of their health insurance.

In a statement to the press, the Chamber says it should send a clear message to the civil service and all statutory authorities and that reducing government spending is critical right now.

It also pledges to support to various strategies taken by government on many issues including crime, which it says threatens to destabilize the society and drive away business.

The Chamber represents just over 700 businesses and 20,000 individuals on the island.

Public outcry over government’s plans to sell its new Government Admin Building has prompted a change of heart.

The building was up for sale, listed by the central tenders committee.  Government planned to lease back the building, but now says that public confusion over those plans has forced it to take all sale options off the market.

The deputy premier tells News 27 government will now retain ownership of the building.

News 27's Tammi Sulliman has the details in the video above.
